MUSIC NOTES

Prelude                                Prelude in F Major                                                        Henry Smart

Henry Smart (1813-1879) was organist at London’s St. Pancras New Church and an organ designer (such as that at Leeds Town Hall). He composed service and concert music for organ, hymn tunes (including Regent Square and Lancashire), anthems and songs.

Introit

(Psalm 27:1-3a) The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? When the wicked, even mine enemies and my foes, came upon me: they stumbled and fell. Though an host should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear.

Offertory

(Psalm 13:3b-4a) Lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death: lest mine enemy say, I have prevailed against him.

Impromtu                                                                               J. l. Krebs

Johann Ludwig Krebs (1713-1780) was a German organist in Zeitz and Altenburg who had been the most famous student of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Postlude              Prelude and Fugue in F Major                                                 J.K.F. Fischer

Johann Kaspar Ferdinand Fischer (c.1656-1746), born in Bohemia, was Kapellmeister in Baden, Germany. His prelude and fugue are from his 1702 collection of similar pieces in 19 different keys.

The gradual hymn (#310) was published in 1774 with the title “Light shining out of Darkness.” It was written by William Cowper (pronounced “Cooper”), a popular English poet who, though suffering from periodic mental illness, was a devout Christian. The tune, London New, is one of 12 tunes in common meter (8 6 8 6) from the Scottish Psalter (1666).

Thank you to all the volunteers for our coffee hour “Set-up/Clean-up” teams!  So far this new weekly team plan for administering coffee hour is working pretty well.  There is however still some confusion about bringing food.  Everyone in the congregation is being asked to bring some food for the coffee hour (every week or alternate weeks – whatever works for you).  The set-up clean-up teams might bring a side dish but their main job is to administer their week’s coffee hour.   That way the full food (financial and time) commitment is spread throughout all those who enjoy the food and not just a few (and we get lots of variety!).  Just bring your food before the 10:30 service and leave it on the metal kitchen table or put it in the refrigerator.  If it needs to be heated let the team know. Would you like to help out on one of the teams (particularly some men to help with the heavy lifting cleaning)?  Just let Tina, Debbie or Susan know.   Come join the Kitchen Teams!  Everyone loves our Coffee Hour!

EVENSONG

Evensong is the sung version of the Evening Prayer service in the Anglican tradition. There is a special Evensong service that will occur on July 28 at 4:00 p.m. at Myers Park Presbyterian Church. You are invited to leave as a group from St. Michael’s at 3:15 p.m. We will go to dinner after the service.

This Evensong service is the conclusion of the Charlotte Course sponsored by the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM), an international organization founded in 1927 for the training of church musicians. The choral participants of children and adults come from several states for a week-long “camp” for improving their skills for choral singers, concluding with this service. The service music and anthems sung by the choir includes music by English composers Ralph Vaughan Williams, George Dyson and Malcolm Archer, as well as the director George Richford (organist-director at Romsey Abbey, England). This is an event for Anglophiles and devotees of the traditions of the Anglican Church.
