March in G Henry Smart
Healey Willan (1880-1968) was an English composer and organist who emigrated to Canada in 1913. He became the most prominent composer of that country while he lived in Toronto as organist-choirmaster St. Paul’s Anglican Church and St. Mary Magdalene and a professor at the University of Toronto. This year marks the 50th anniversary of his death and the 90th of his setting of the liturgy that our congregation sing each week. The Irish tune “Slane” serves as the Sermon Hymn (to a 1933 English poem relating to angels) and the Prelude in Willan’s last organ composition.
The music after the Gospel is an excerpt from a fanfare by Guy Henry
Eldridge (1904-1976), a London organist and professor of the London
College of Music and the Guildhall School of Music.
The anthem (#121 in The Hymnal 1940) is an 1862 translation of a 9th century Greek poem, attributed to St. Joseph the Hymnographer who lived in Constantinople. The verses express characteristics of angels taken from Scripture, including the names of Michael, Raphael and Gabriel. The tune was composed in 1868 for this poem by Henry Smart, London organist and composer of anthems, hymn tunes and organ works, whose march is heard as the Postlude.
